Mahathir Quits UMNO?

First I read about this from Zorro who was alerted by his Hantu. I immediately crossed over to Malaysian Insider and below is what I got.

More to come
KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — News reports say former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has quit the ruling party after a long feud with his successor Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Star online and Malaysiakini news portals say Mahathir is quitting the United Malays National Organisation party with immediate effect. He is urging other members to do the same.
Malaysiakini said Dr Mahathir announced this at a speech in Kedah earlier today.
It quoted him as saying: "I will only come back to the party when there is a change in leadership." He said his decision is a sign of no-confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Abdullah.
Mahathir appointed Abdullah to succeed him in 2003 when he retired after 22 years as prime minister. But the two fell out within a year. — AP

The question is,
1. What is he up to? He asked others to follow him so will Mukhriz be the first? After their 2 hour meeting, would Najib also jump into this new unbaptised ship? Would Ku Li also do likewise?

2. Is he doing it to gauge the support he has?

3. The moment there are others who follow him, UMNO and thereby BN would be weaker so what does this signal? Would his followers be independent independents or would they be BN supporting independents who could hold Pak Lah at ransom?

4. Is he trying to get enough numbers to be Kingmaker? Should he get more than 30 followers, wouldn't Dollah be hardpressed to retain his premiership and thereby concede certain conssesions like closing an eye on the Lingam fiasco or even offer PR his people's support for the same conssesion?

5. After playing the racial card, would he also be inviting non Malay MPs to join him?

The game is getting very interesting. Is PR ready.

Update:
He has performed a well choreographed sandiwara before where Rafidah clung to him tearing her hairs off, though I am sure she regrets it now, and said he was resigning. The script then was for someone to 'pujuk the cry-baby' into not resigning, and that sulky old man finally acceded to the 'appeals' of the members.
I wouldn't be surprise if very soon there will be appeals after appeals by his cronies but made to sound as if it was from the majority of UMNO leaders and members and he finally retracts his resignation thus slapping Pak Lah in the face. Just a thought.

Chegu,
Anwar been talking abt 'lompat si katak lompat'
What happen if these BN MPs decided 2 quit BN but decided to do the Mahathir? No party N become an indie?

Could we see the only indie MP leading the kataks in a newly formed coalition, PLK (Party Lompat Katak)? I can't imagine PLK govern the country. But then again, anything can happen!

Mute,
Kalau pak lah dah lemah tapi masih ada sedikit support tak mungkin kah dia throw dia punya support behind PR? Selepas main racial card adakah MP BN bukan Melayu akan support Mahathir or ikut Pak Lah untuk support PR?

Al-Fatihah for your aunt. May her soul rests among those blessed and loved by Him.
And as for Mahathir's depature from UMNO, well, what can we say. Dato' Onn, Tunku, Hussein Onn were all ended up outside the party they led. Maybe this is something typical of UMNOs politics.

A friend from Singapore told me 10 years ago that Malaysian politics is never dry. The best stories always and never fail come from UMNO. It is like a party that churns out box office movie all the time.

So now the old man quits UMNO, I think a new sequel just began and I think i am getting an overdose of politics chegu.

He should join MIC and Samy Vellu.

Che'gu,
Agree with Shirzad on the norms of ex UMNO leaders ending up outside the party they once led. The same will happen to Mahathir.

Unknown said...

Shirzad,
Tengku and Hussein Onn died outside UMNO= indisputable fact.

Mahathir always measure his steps= indisputable step.

I don't believe its a spur of the moment stuff. If no one follows him, he will lost in oblivion, if many do then it may make a desperate Pak lah go the other way.

Unknown said...

Zawi,
I don't think he does anything without thinking of the consequences.

Frankie,
You are very right. UMNO is always box-office, plenty of actions, intrigues, back-stabbing, the works.

anonymous,
Tepat sekali, party tu lah tempat dia sebenarnya.

Tuan Guru,

Saya harap orang Malaysia belajarlah sikit basics of Pambulogy, jangan suka terkejut. Dulu dia berenti jadi PM tapi masih mau cakap sana cakap sini. Sekarang dia berenti UMNO, ingat dia boleh tutup mulut ka?

Obviously his move is very much related to the findings of the Commission on the Lingam tape. AAB is tightening the screws and so he has to make some desperate moves to get out of being in a defensive position.

Ini pambu lain sikit dari pambu lain. Pambu lain, dia punya bisa dalam gigi, pambu ni dia punya kulit pun sudah bisa. Dia punya lidah bercabang 6.

Salam che'gu:

We rarely see an oldtimer quit party for no reason unless they really quit politics altogether.

DrM never quit politics. The inisputable fact is he is very much active now than before.

Being a seasoned and cunning politician that he is, he have calculated his every moves.Any setbacks and he'll quickly pull a step back to make a new move.He is like a master chess player when it comes to politics.

He gave no indication of quiting politic, just quiting UMNO UNTIL there is a leadership change.

I do not think his men will quit but they will pressure Pak Lah.They will become a duri inside the daging for Pak Lah and UMNO.

This move might even be a checkmate move to PL.

DrM is no Kingmaker che'gu. He is the Puppetmaster.

bayi,
Yes, I think so too, the Commission is hurting him like he has never been hurt before.

Doc,
Yes, Madet will die a politician and he will try to trick the angel of death into taking somebody else's life. Then he will use politics to get to heaven and eventtually try to replace god because he truly believes that he is god.

It's good for him.

...and for a lot of people

Unknown said...

Hantu,
Care to elaborate because it sounds interesting.

Your last para is spot on....a definite possibility by the master choreographer. But Capt.Yusof thinks it is his swan song. I can accept this but not a gang-bang.

Che'gu. It's rather obvious. Tan Sri Musa said the pain in the butt is gone now.

Sorry, it was Tun Musa Hitam

The question is...the answer pula...

1. What is he up to? He asked others to follow him so will Mukhriz be the first? After their 2 hour meeting, would Najib also jump into this new unbaptised ship? Would Ku Li also do likewise?

Ali: Probably a sandiwara & sure people terkejut sana sini...but Melayu mudah lupa, you see.

2. Is he doing it to gauge the support he has?

Ali: Yes & No. Yes,he is testing his ground to see who are still loyal to him. No,coz he's tired with Pat Lah,who buat tak tau aje!

3. The moment there are others who follow him, UMNO and thereby BN would be weaker so what does this signal? Would his followers be independent independents or would they be BN supporting independents who could hold Pak Lah at ransom?

Ali: Mahathir is killing 2 birds with a stone.Denying Pat Lah UMNO's leadership & denying Pakatan Rakyat from forming the gomen.

Ali:Mahathir probably will get support from the grassroot members but not UMNO MPs,maybe a few, including Mukhriz.

5. After playing the racial card, would he also be inviting non Malay MPs to join him?

Ali: Probaly Samy Vellu will join him.

Mahathir's move has put Mukhriz in a dilemma. Nak ikut ayahanda tercinta or Pat Lah yang goyah...

cheers.

Chegu, something made me realised that all these is for self serving interest. Allow me to share this incident which happened to me a few hours ago. I was walking and there is this Malay guy on a bicycle approached me and said, "Abang, minta maaf, saya ni Melayu, tapi abang bolehkah tolong saya, saya ni bukan nak minta duit, tapi, saya cuba ambil duit dari ATM, tapi tak boleh, saya cuma ada RM15.00 dalam baki. Saya nak beli tepung susu untuk anak saya" And I quicky asked him to follow me to the shop to buy for him a tin of Dumex Dugro for his 16 months old baby. I told him, don't mentioned race to me, that is for the politicians. When a person needs help, we will help each other regardless of race. I wish him well. But after he cycled away, my heart pains because I could have helped him more, but due to long weekend and the money in my wallet not enough for me to go further, I can't afford to provide more.

It made me think, poverty is real chegu, the rising cost of everything is hurting everyone and it hurts more to the poor. The government and the people should not be preoccupied with too much politicking but to tackle the rising cost and to strengthen the country economy.

Unknown said...

Zorro,
Yes, its a swan song alright but I don't believe that he resigns because he wants to resign. It is just not Mahathir. What ever he does is part of a design, not resignation.

Unknown said...

Hantu,
Tun Musa is wrong, one thing one must never do is to write Mahathir off.

Unknown said...

Ali,
Very nice answers, now, which one is it?

Unknown said...

Frankie,
I take my hat off to you.
Yes, poverty is real. He who was once okay is now poor not because he earns less than before but because the speed of the increase in prices is just phenomenal, unseen before.

Pain in the butt he was. Now the pain is gone, some people will miss it. Why? Becoz they got used to it. They still move around peculiarly like the pain is still there. When asked: why you walk so funny like that? I thought the pain has already gone? The reply: ya ka? Hehehe... I will have to confess.... I naturally walk funny like this but I always blamed it on the pain. So, Che'gu, it's not the pain, it's the way you walk.

Unknown said...

Hantu,
Oh he was and still is a pain in the butt alright, its the people who don't know they are being screwed.

cakapaje said...

Salam Cikgu,

Your reply "Tengku and Hussein Onn died outside UMNO= indisputable fact", allow me to add another as a reminder to all.

The UMNO chedet has resigned from is UMNO Baru. The old UMNO is dead and buried which was why chedet carried a vendetta against Tun Salleh Abbas. Thus, chedet is not repeating history, but merely making a new one.

Unknown said...

Shah,
That mean man cares not what happens to his party. The fact that it might destroy the party means nothing to him because he is above the party. The fact that all these fighting would hurt the country economically also means nothing to him because Mahathir is after all bigger than Malaysia, right?

Never have I, in my life, seen such a vain man.
